The Journey of *Ronsel*

In *Slumdog Millionaire*, Danny Boyle tells the story of an uneducated boy from Mumbai who wins a TV game show by answering every question correctly. Jamal, the protagonist, triumphs because every answer is connected—in some strange way—to a moment in his life; he is the only one who could possibly know them all. Similarly, only Marcos Coll could create an album like *Ronsel*—a work that traces his life’s journey from the time he left Galicia as a teenager to pursue the blues, passing through Madrid and Berlin before traveling to the farthest corners of the globe with nothing but a harmonica in his pocket.

Like Jamal, Marcos has lived a full life and learned from everyone he met; three decades after leaving home, he has created the finest work of his fabulous career with this album. In this second *Ronsel* release, Coll takes us on a musical tour of his own life story. The tracks feature a great-grandfather who died 80 years ago—brought back to life by the sound of Marcos’s harmonica—as well as Galician connections, such as the wild spoken-word performance by Julián (of Siniestro Total) and a beautiful gift from the ever-generous Javier Collado. Coll also indulged in the pleasure of having a living blues legend like Charlie Musselwhite sing an ode to his hometown of Santiago, and even took the leap to sing himself on the catchy track “Qué sé yo.”

*Ronsel* is an album made by friends; Jairo Zabala—acting as squire, partner, and driving force—leaves his mark on the record, though labeling him merely as a producer would be woefully reductive.
