Eine Kategorie für Eric Bibbs Musik zu finden, ist nicht leicht. Bei ihm fließen Blues, Folk, R&B, Gospel und Jazz auf eine ganz persönliche Art ineinander. Bibb findet dabei immer wieder Zeilen und Metaphern, die auf die universelle Dimension der menschlichen Erfahrung verweisen, ganz wie es die Blues- und Folktradition verlangt. Mit „Migration Blues“ legte er 2017 ein Album vor, das Bibb besonders am Herzen liegt. Er thematisiert darauf den Blues als Musik, die nur durch die Wanderung und Flucht der schwarzen Musiker entstand: die Deportation der Sklaven von Westafrika nach Amerika, die Flucht aus den Südstaaten in den Norden und die aus der Karibik nach Amerika und Europa. Hier entwickelte der Blues seine Tiefe, Melancholie und auch Lebensfreude, die ihn so einzigartig macht. Gemeinsam mit seinem Partner an der Gitarre, Michael Jerome Browne, stellt Eric Bibb sein aktuelles Album vor.

Eric Bibb is one of the most respected blues singer/songwriters of our time. His career spans five decades, 37 albums, countless radio & TV shows and non-stop tours, making him one of the leading bluesmen of his generation. His music is always reverent, keeping one foot in the blues and folk storytelling traditions. “Whether you’re looking at a former sharecropper, hitchhiking from Clarksdale to Chicago in 1923, or an orphan from Aleppo, in a boat full of refugees in 2016 – it’s migration blues,” Eric says about his new release, Migration Blues. The message runs deep as the mighty Mississippi. „My only regret about Migration Blues is that the people who need to hear and understand it the most are the folks who’ll refute its meaning or never give it a listen.“ Mainly composed of new tunes, Migration Blues also includes covers of Bob Dylan’s “Masters of War” and Woody Guthrie’s “This Land Is Your Land.” An arrangement of the traditional “Mornin’ Train,” closes the opus.
