Sein Spiel ist offen, kraftstrotzend, gleichzeitig schafft er virtuos rätselhaft-mystische Klanglandschaften voller Poesie und Sensibilität. Ihn live zu erleben kann aber auch irritieren. Ob mit seinem neunköpfigen Kammerjazzensemble, seinem Quintett oder dem Quartett, stets ist der 71-jährige das Zentrum der Band, die er leitet. Geboren in Urbana, Illinois, und aufgewachsen in der Bay Area von San Francisco, studierte er an der Stanford University und ging nach seinem Abschluss zunächst mit Stan Kanton auf Tournee. Rund zwei Jahrzehnte lang wurde er von Koryphäen wie Woody Herman, Horace Silver, Lee Konitz oder Phil Woods engagiert, nahm Platten mit Bill Evans, Dizzy Gillespie und Charlie Haden auf und wurde zunehmend als Komponist und Arrangeur angefragt. Seit 1989 ist Harrell überwiegend mit eigenen Projekten erfolgreich unterwegs.

His music is at once intelligent, soulful, fresh and accessible. The last ten years have ushered Harrell through a singularly fruitful period. While continuing to tour actively around the world, he has produced an average of one album a year with each successive release markedly distinct from its predecessor. In addition to the albums and thousands of concerts worldwide as a leader, Harrell has worked with important figures in jazz history including Stan Kenton, Woody Herman, Dizzie Gillespie, Horace Silver, Art Farmer, Phil Woods, Lee Konitz, Sam Jones (with whom he co-led a big band in the 70s), Jim Hall, Charlie Haden, Joe Lovano. Harrell also recorded on Grammy-winning albums by Gerry Mulligan and Bill Evans.
